We are near retirement and from California all our life and never been to
New England. We have 2 days weekend in NE.
Boston or NYC, which city should we choose? Typical sightseeing.
We been to NYC some 15 years ago, and enjoy it very much.

No contest. Boston is a great, walkable, sightseeing city. You don't need
a car and can walk to many of the interesting, historic sights. If or when
you need it, the subway system is very easy to manage and not expensive.

Same for NYC and NYC is, of course, the center of the solar
system... Where else can you find the greatest museums, the
greatest shows, the greatest shopping and the cututral and
financial engine that drives western civilization? Where else can
you stand in Grand Central Terminal and see the world pass by?

Nontheless, I endorse Boston, as well. It is, in truth, more user
friendly, better preserved and geographically interesting. I've
found watching a Redsox game at Fenway, strolling Harvard's
campus ('cross the river), touring from Livingston to Concord,
and walking the Freedom Trail to be as memorable as anything
I ever did in NYC (... 'cept for dining at the WTC on 9/01/01).

They are completely different cities.

Boston is mainly about history. If you enjoy walking, you can have a
pleasant weekend seeing all the things you read about in your 6th grade
American history class. Sure, it is also a big city, you can avoid that or
see it as you chose. Personally I would think about going to Cambridge
rather than Boston.

New York is all about energy. The crowds of people going every whichway.
The cars madly surging. And it goes on for miles and miles and miles. Yes,
there are also historical sites and museums, but with two days you won't
want to spend much time there.
